When teaching yourself Martial Arts at home, or when you are training solo, developing your awareness will be the primary skill that you need to pay attention to.

It is one thing to be able to defend yourself in a sticky situation, it will be quite another to avoid that situation all together (and that without ‘losing face’ either).

Train yourself to observe everything in your surroundings. What people wear, the way they walk, the way they carry themselves, etc. You must, for example be able to see a person carrying a concealed firearm and instantly gauge aggressive behaviour or a threat of some kind.

In bodyguarding they have an interesting colour code system to train your awareness.

What Is The Colour Code System?

White – you are fast asleep (sometimes whilst wide awake)
Yellow – you are alert and aware but there is no threat
Orange – there is an unconfirmed threat, but you don’t know what it is yet
Red – the threat is confirmed
Black – you are under attack


You should never be in White, even if you are sleeping (although this doesn’t always happen).

Let your relaxed awareness be in Yellow where you awareness is not fixed on anything specifically and takes everything in.

From Orange upward, the threat is specific and your attention is fixed on the threat, although you must be sure that there are no other threats in the vicinity.

This is the time to work on confronting the threat (if you need to) or to avoid the threat.

But once you are in Red and Black you are in a fight, the adrenaline is pumping and it is now time to act.

Throughout your day your awareness will go through these colours. By paying special attention to them you will develop your awareness to a higher level, a crucial aspect of Martial Arts training and especially for those learning Martial Arts at home.
